Manuela Kagerbauer
I make visually stimulating and immersive installations. I have an interest in representing the early symptoms of macular degeneration, which is a visual impairment. I am inspired by the visual distortion and movement a person with macular degeneration experiences when viewing static straight lines. Using my knowledge of jewellery making, particularly of glass and metal, in combination with digital media, I make work on a large scale. I challenge the perception of jewellery exclusively as a wearable object and blur the line between jewellery, sculpture and art. In my recent body of work, I explore optical illusions, Bridget Riley's Op-art and patterns representative of early stage macular degeneration. I use these visual tools to animate my abstract installation and to stimulate and engage spectators, as well as suggest movement and induce confusion.
