Testing the theories in Sigmund Freud’s essay ‘The Uncanny’, my work investigates what lies between the familiar and the unfamiliar. Confusion and intrigue are the emotions I aim to evoke through the interfering patterns presented on the sliding screens. The 2D images collide to provide depth through illusion and help mask the elements in the way the mind masks the things it wishes to keep hidden. Domestic life is often a subject tested in art in relation to the concepts researched in ‘The Uncanny’. This can be displayed through use of furniture and its stability in our day to day life. Testing something familiar but causing it to feel somewhat unfamiliar could release a sense of unease within the viewer, triggered by memory or nostalgia. Coming from a conceptual art background, my aim was to apply function to my work while maintaining a fine art way of thinking and developing.
